The images are raw, sometimes terrible: the body deserted by consciousness, the body bare, the body empties. No romanticism possible. Black and white creates a distance but we are at the heart of the drama, breaking into the banal setting of a daily. The usual boundaries of intimacy and modesty fade away. Yet there is sweetness. The gentleness of those who are there to listen, reassure, hold a hand. And some of these images can be read as vigils, as piety. The photographs that Grégoire Korganow took for a year alongside the SMUR of Gonesse outline an experience - moment of death, eclipse of life - that eludes those who cross it. Injured in 2007, revived by an emergency team, he himself experienced this enigma of the time suspended between life and death. We had to go and see: the mystery remains intact.
