Sortie de scène
(Out of Stage)
2014
Festival Montpellier Danse 2014 in the frame of a résidency at the Agora, cité internationale de la danse
To the question “What is dance?” on a debate, the contemporary choreographers Anne-Teresa de Keersmaeker and William Forsythe answered “it is walking, turning, jumping, moving the arms”. I then knew that I would travel the opposite path. I will photograph dance indirectly, on the motionless bodies of dancers. I’m not interested in the execution of the movement but on the traces it leaves on the still dancer. I will stop time as they exit the stage. I will congeal movement. It is the silence after the last note that I will explore. What the body continues to say when movement stops. I will ask the dancer to invite me to attend this voluntary abandon of the body to the upright position.
